Oldenburg Vineyards Chenin Blanc 2020

Stellenbosch, South Africa

100% Chenin Blanc | 13.5% ABV

We are proud to offer this South African white wine made from 100% Chenin Blanc grapes in the Stellenbosch region. Judicious use of oak, both in time and by limiting the component of new wood, means that the honeysuckle and jasmine aromas of the Chenin are in perfect balance with the light almond notes from the oak.

It shows a sumptuous straw-yellow colour in the glass. On the nose, peaches and cream, honey-melon, mangoes and pineapple. The mouth-feel is sublime, the acidity is zesty, and the fruit is incredibly balanced. The palate shows ripe pears, banana and star jasmine, accompanied by an elegant hint of vanilla and popcorn.

Service: Enjoy slightly chilled at 11°C.

Food Pairing: Excellent with cheese, fish, pork, poultry, spice and vegetarian dishes.

Winemaker Nic van Aarde joined the winery in 2018. A business and commerce graduate turned winemaker, Nic has an extensive record of successful harvests across the globe, spanning regions such as New Zealand, France, Australia and California. Residing on the farm alongside his wife and two daughters, he has an in-depth understanding of the terroir, the distinct vineyard blocks, and the unique manner in which the valley influences the character and quality of the wines produced.

“My mission is to ‘let the terroir talk’ by allowing our mysterious site to fully show and express itself. This is achieved by picking the grapes at optimal ripeness, minimal manipulation in the cellar and gentle extraction to produce balanced, elegant wines” says Nic.

Situated in an elevated valley of outstanding beauty, the 30 hectare Oldenburg Vineyards is surrounded by a spectacular mountain amphitheatre, only 8 kilometres from Stellenbosch on the road to Franschhoek. At the heart of the farm lies Rondekop – the iconic, round hill which influences the vineyards planted on and around it, creating an extraordinary terroir. The location benefits from the confluence of 8 natural elements allowing the team to make wines that truly reflect their Place.

Cellaring: Drinking well now, will develop over next 3-5 years.

Vinification: Grapes were picked by hand from a 14-year-old single vineyard, planted on alluvial soils, at 320m above sea level. Bunches were sorted by hand and the whole bunch was pressed in a pneumatic press on a gentle Champagne cycle. The juice was settled overnight and then racked to old 300 L French oak barrels, concrete eggs, and a new 2500 L Austrian oak Foudre. Spontaneous fermentation is completed within 2-3 months. Partial malolactic conversion was done on some of the batches. The wine was matured for 11 months in oak. It was gently fined and filtered before bottling.
