Learn about organic and biodynamic wines
Your questions answeredMany people prefer to choose organic wines due to the organic farm, avoiding the excessive use of chemicals commonplace in much industrial farming around the world. Most of the wine producers we work with are families who live on or near the vines they are tending, and they don't want chemicals in their backyard.
However there is no reliable evidence that choosing organic wine prevents hangovers. Organic certification restricts certain agricultural and winemaking inputs, but organic wine still contains alcohol. As such we recommend enjoying all wine in moderation.
Wine&Earth carefully handpicks wines for their quality, provenance and production practices rather than expecting specific physical health benefits.
Organic viticulture restricts synthetic pesticides and fertilisers and can support healthier soils and biodiversity.
However, a wine's overall environmental footprint also depends on water use, energy, packaging, transport and vineyard management.
We meet the producers we work with and aim to visit their vineyards periodically. We seek to understand what farming and production practices are in use. We tend to see a strong correlation between organic farming and broader environmentally and socially conscious producers who go further to product high quality wines with respect for people and the planet.
At B Corp certified Wine&Earth we assess sustainability beyond organic certification, including biodiversity, resource use and social responsibility.
Organic wine follows defined standards for vineyard management and winemaking. Sustainable wine is a broader concept, potentially encompassing carbon emissions, water conservation, packaging, biodiversity and workers' welfare. A wine can be sustainably produced without being certified organic, which is why Wine&Earth evaluates producers across several environmental and social criteria.

Look for independent organic certification on the label - for example from the Association Biologique (AB) in France and the Soil Association in the UK - rather than relying on marketing descriptions such as “natural” or “eco-friendly”.
At Wine&Earth, our product information distinguishes independently certified organic wines from those undergoing conversion or practising organic methods without certification. We audit the vineyards and wine producers we work with and authenticate their certifications for you. We also encourage all practising wine estates who we work with to get independent certification.

All wines naturally produce some sulphites during fermentation, including organic and biodynamic wines.
Organic winemakers may also add some sulphites to preserve freshness and prevent spoilage. Certified organic wines are subject to stricter limits on added sulphites than conventional wines, although the actual sulphite levels vary by producer and wine.
Although sulphites are often blamed for headaches after drinking wine, there is little scientific evidence that they are a common cause. Alcohol itself, dehydration and potentially other compounds found in wine, such as histamines, are more likely contributors, although the precise causes of wine-related headaches are not fully understood.
Genuine sulphite allergy is extremely rare. According to Allergy UK, fewer than 2% of people are thought to experience sulphite sensitivity, although it is more common amongst people with asthma. Most wine drinkers can tolerate sulphites without difficulty.
Wine&Earth's wine listings include sulphite information where available, and we offer a dedicated low-sulphite wine collection, featuring wines with sulphite levels between 10 and 99 mg/L.
No. Organic certification concerns how grapes are grown and wine is produced, but some winemakers use animal-derived processing aids, such as egg white or casein, during clarification. Many organic wines are vegan-friendly, but the two classifications are not interchangeable. Browse our vegan-friendly wines and check each wine's credentials.
Not necessarily!
Organic certification describes production methods, not flavour or quality. Grape variety, terroir, climate and the winemaker's skill all influence the final result. At Wine&Earth, we select wines first and foremost for their quality and character, alongside their environmental credentials. Wine&Earth's collection of sustainable wines has been handpicked by a Master of Wines, and we re-taste every vintage to ensure you're getting a bottle of wine that will delight your palate without leaving a hangover for the planet.
For an approachable organic red, try Carus Vini Terzona Toscana Rosso, an independently certified organic wine from Tuscany. Organic wine production follows defined standards restricting synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, with additional requirements for winemaking. Biodynamic viticulture builds on organic principles with a holistic approach to vineyard management, soil health and biodiversity.
In sustainability terms, we find there is a strong overlap between producers practising organic and biodynamic viticulture. The producers we work with make conscious decisions on how they farm and care for the land, while producing delicious high-quality wines in a more sustainable way.
A great starting point is Hedges Family Estate, whose Washington State portfolio includes independently certified biodynamic wines. Indeed, this is one of Wine&Earth co-founder Martin's favourite wine estates from our entire collection.
Biodynamic methods focus on the vineyard as an interconnected agricultural ecosystem. They do not guarantee a particular flavour, but the resulting wines can offer exceptional quality and character.
Biodynamic wine is produced from grapes grown using a holistic approach to farming that treats the vineyard as a living ecosystem. Building on organic principles, biodynamic viticulture emphasises soil health, biodiversity, natural composting and reduced reliance on external inputs.
Growers also use specialised botanical and mineral preparations and may follow lunar and astronomical calendars when planning vineyard activities.
Independent certification schemes, including Demeter and Biodyvin, recognise wines produced according to biodynamic standards. At Wine&Earth we clearly label and signpost the certifications awarded to the vineyards we work with.
Not necessarily.
Both organic and biodynamic wines prioritise environmentally responsible viticulture, but biodynamic farming goes further by adopting a holistic philosophy of vineyard management. Some growers believe this produces healthier soils and more expressive wines, although there is no conclusive evidence that biodynamic wines consistently taste better than organic wines. At Wine&Earth, we believe the most important considerations are wine quality, provenance and genuine environmental responsibility. Both organic and biodynamic producers can make exceptional wines.
