Nestled in the rolling hills of Bordeaux, Château Bessan is a hidden gem discovered at the bend of a small, picturesque road winding through the Garonne’s meanders. Perched at an altitude of 90 meters, Bessan offers sweeping views of the vineyards that stretch toward the horizon, flanked by the scenic Premières Côtes de Bordeaux and the historic village of Cadillac.
Returning to and Protecting Nature
At Château Bessan, the commitment to organic farming is not just a choice; it’s a philosophy. Since 2011, the estate's entire surface area of vines and meadows has been cultivated under organic farming guidelines. No weedkillers or chemical treatments are used, allowing the soil, fauna, and flora to flourish naturally. This is not only to protect the environment but also to safeguard the health of customers and those who care for the land.
Working the soil by hand and fostering biodiversity, Château Bessan strives to produce wines that reflect the true character of their terroir. These methods are a return to traditional practices, where careful observation and respect for nature lead to the finest quality vintages.
A Long Family Legacy
In 1986, Rémy and Sylvie Verdier (photographed) became the proud owners of the estate, breathing new life into the vineyard with replanting efforts and modernizing the winery. Rémy’s deep-rooted connection to wine, cultivated through a childhood spent in the vineyard, led him to obtain diplomas in viticulture, oenology, and wine tasting. He then set about crafting his range of “Château Bessan” wines.
Sylvie Verdier, with her sharp business acumen and hands-on work ethic, has played a crucial role in the estate’s success, managing customer relations, accounting, and even taking on the vineyard’s toughest tasks with ease. Now, after decades of dedication, the couple is passing the torch to their son Mathieu
A Unique Terroir: The Heart of the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux
The terroir of Château Bessan is exceptional. Situated in the historic Aquitaine region, where the Romans first planted vines, the vineyard benefits from an ideal mix of clay, sand, and gravel atop limestone rock. This ensures the soil’s richness and vitality, creating the perfect environment for cultivating premium wines.
The vineyard’s south-eastern exposure, steep hillsides, and proximity to both the Atlantic Ocean and the Garonne River provide a temperate climate and optimal sunshine, giving each grape its full potential. From its prime position at the heights of Bessan, 2 hectares of vines overlook the Garonne and Gironde moors, offering a breathtaking view.
The Importance of "Cru"
At Château Bessan, each bottle tells the story of a “cru,” a wine produced from a specific, well-defined terroir. With the vines growing in one continuous stretch around the estate, the distinct characteristics of the land are fully captured in every grape.
Under the careful guidance of winemaker Mathieu Verdier, planting densities are meticulously planned to help each vine achieve the greatest concentration of flavor. The result? A wine of exceptional quality, influenced by Mathieu’s dedication to organic farming and his deep connection to the land.
