A Testament to Tradition: Frerejean Frères

A Testament to Tradition: Frerejean Frères

Maison Frerejean Frères, founded by three brothers in the Grand Cru village of Avize, Champagne, is one of our best examples of tradition meets innovation at Wine&Earth. From its humble beginnings as a passion project to its current status as a global sensation, Frerejean Frères continues to set itself apart with its mindful approach to Champagne making.

A Rich Family History

Founded in 2005 by brothers Guillaume, Richard, and Rodolphe Frerejean-Taittinger, this boutique Champagne house began as a small-batch operation, crafting exclusive wines for family and friends. Today, they produce over 130,000 bottles per year, with ambitions to grow to 300,000 bottles while maintaining their core values of quality and exclusivity.

The brothers grew up between the vines of Avize and with 30 years of Champagne expertise, and know every vineyard in the area. In fact, the family’s history goes back to the Napoleonic era, when their ancestors supplied cannons to the French army to defend the region. This deep connection to Champagne’s history and their local terroir shines through in every bottle.

The Côte des Blancs

The Grand Cru village of Avize, nestled in the Côte des Blancs, is where magic happens. The region is famed for its chalky soil, which produces Chardonnay grapes with a distinct minerality, giving the wines of Frerejean Frères their signature elegance and freshness.

Each bottle is crafted from hand-selected grapes from vines over 40 years old, with some vines dating back to 1926. The unique parcels of land contribute to the Champagne’s balanced complexity, as different grape varieties are expertly blended to create cuvées that are both distinctive and harmonious.

True Craftmanship

At Frerejean Frères, their motto is simple: “We take our time to make Champagne for people who can take the time to drink it.” Each bottle of their Champagne is a product of patience, with wines taking between 4 and 12 years to come to life.

The house’s production process honours traditional Champagne-making techniques while leaving room for innovation. Each bottle undergoes manual riddling (turning by hand) and minimal sugar is added in the final stages to retain the purity of the terroir. With a low-chemical approach and minimal use of pesticides, Frerejean Frères stays true to sustainable practices while producing Champagnes with low levels of sulphites, ensuring both quality and environmental respect.

Every step of the process is meticulously managed, from the moment the grapes are hand-selected on the vine to the blending of different grape varieties and "crus" (vineyard locations) that create the final product.
